Intellectual Disability

This five-hour course provides an overview of the development and characteristics of Intellectual Disability (ID) using real life examples and current research. ID is defined and key statistics are presented. A brief history of the conceptualization of ID follows its evolution to our current understanding. Common characteristics found in those with ID are described. An examination of ID’s overall etiology includes the description of prevalent genetic and environmental causes. Finally, procedures and best practices in assessment, diagnosis, and support planning are offered.
