Course Summary
Failure to report known or suspected elder or dependent adult abuse can be a crime under California law. To ensure administrators and staff are properly trained in recognizing and reporting abuse in licensed care settings, Welfare and Institutions Code section 15655 requires long-term health care facilities, community care facilities, and residential care facilities for the elderly that provide care to adults to provide training in recognizing and reporting elder and dependent adult abuse, as prescribed by the Department of Justice.
The Department of Justice curriculum “Your Legal Duty… Reporting Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse” was developed by the Department of Justice in cooperation with the Department of Health Care Services and the Department of Social Services to meet the minimum core training requirements.
Because reporting requirements and forms are updated over time, this course supplements the core curriculum with current reporting procedures and timelines reflected in CDSS mandated reporting forms and instructions, including the “serious bodily injury” definition and timeframes for reporting physical abuse in licensed care settings.
Regional center vendors should also be aware that regional centers maintain Zero Tolerance policies regarding consumer abuse or neglect and provide annual notice to vendors; these policies are in addition to mandated reporting duties under California law.
This course is not approved for ARF, GH, or STRTP.
